New Stakeholders

It is clear today that telecom operators cannot be ignored when it comes to payment.

Billions of mobile handsets in the pockets of consumers worldwide, the constitution of large global players with hundreds of millions of customers (Vodafone, Orange, Telefonica, China Mobile, DoComo…), the development of new technologies (IP network and NFC), and the acceleration of the “virtualisation” of interactions/transactions are just a few examples that confirm the new role that telecom operators will be increasingly playing in the payment arena (both issuing and acquiring).

It is now obvious that the intrinsic features of the mobile phone (as a payment terminal, as a way to identify and authenticate the user, as a concentrator of multiple applications) will enable mobile payment to become increasingly prevalent in emerging and mature markets.

On the acquiring side, new offers and services are more easily provided to merchants: loyalty, marketing services, geo-localization…
